Corns and calluses are built up layers of compacted, dead skin. They are caused by repeated friction from skin rubbing against bony areas or against an improperly fitted shoe. The friction and pressure can burn or otherwise be painful and may be relieved by moleskin or padding on the affected areas.
Pressure can be relieved when your podiatrist cuts or trims the corns or callouses. Never try this on your own.
The symptoms will return quickly if one continues to wear improper shoes. Padding and offloading can decrease the symptoms. In severe cases, surgery may be considered to correct any underlying deformity that may be causing the corn or callous.
